Can still improve

30/ 4/2008

GLOSSOP North End manager Steve Young admitted he was a disappointed man despite guiding the Hillmen to seventh place in the Vodkat League table.

Monday night’s 2-1 defeat against Trafford at Surrey Street saw North End miss out on fourth place by three points.

While the club’s supporters might have been pleased at their final position, Young claimed there was still room for improvement.

He said: "I’m disappointed because I wanted to be in the top five.

"Everyone tells me what a good year it’s been but Monday night was a bit of a kick in the teeth, so I’m disappointed.

"Ask anyone apart from myself and the coaching staff and they’ll be pleased!

"We’ve got more points than last season from four fewer games, we’ve scored more goals and let fewer in, but the target was to get in the top five and we haven’t achieved that.

"However, with the addition of four or five more players, I’d say that was achievable for next season."

Young’s unhappiness shows the change in expectation at Surrey Street after years spent battling in the wrong half of the table.

Nevertheless, talks have started with would-be arrivals as North End seek to build a squad capable of mounting a possible promotion charge during the 2008/09 campaign.

Young said: "I feel we need a goalscorer, we’ve been talking to someone in our league about that.

"We feel we need a centre-back to add a bit of competition to what we’ve already got and we certainly need a couple of midfielders.

"We need someone who’s been there, done it and seen it, so we have got someone in mind and we’ve talked to them already.

"I’d say there’s a 50-50 chance of convincing them to join us."
