GLOSSOP’S first XV returned to league duties after a couple of weeks off and recorded a convincing victory over struggling Grimsby.

With the pitch already sodden from the week’s rain, further downpours during the game reduced the field to full quagmire status, not conducive to open rugby.

Andrew Horbatchewskij opened the scoring for Glossop as he accelerated into space and left Grimsby’s backline in his wake, his conversion putting the home side 7-0 ahead.

Harrison could have gone over for Glossop, but failed to control the ball when he had a clear run, while two further chances were missed after the final pass went astray.

A penalty made it 10-0 at half-time, and with a biting wind blowing across the field, Glossop came out of the traps quickly and forced Grimsby to knock on.

They crossed for a second try when Dave Shirt drove over the line to make it 15-0 with Glossop’s rolling maul functioning perfectly.

The same tactic worked again for Glossop five minutes later, this time Wilkinson squirming through the tacklers to bundle over.

Leading 20-0, Glossop saw 18-year-old Jonny Tennant miss out on a chance to round off an outstanding full debut when the teenager was let down by his footballing skills, kicking the ball dead at the last minute.

Clark then knocked on over the line and Gareth Williams was held up, but the former was next to score from a five-metre scrum.

Stanford confirmed the win for Glossop, dummying three players and ghosting in untouched for a try which ended the scoring.

Grimsby fought hard to get on the scoreboard during the last 10 minutes but stern defensive play kept them at bay.
