Glossop RUFC 35 Sleaford 0
13/ 2/2008
GLOSSOP strolled to their fourth win in five games on Saturday against a stubborn Sleaford outfit.
However, with a whistle-happy referee and numerous lengthy stoppages for injury, the game lacked any cohesion.
It was the Glossop backline who took the initiative; with what must have been Horbatchewskyj’s first touch of the ball, he handed off the first would-be tackler as well as the next three to sprint over after two minutes.
Although Sleaford possessed a solid scrum, it was a good set piece from the Glossop pack that saw them extend their lead as Pickerell worked the ball to Murphy who came in off his wing to finish in style.
A successful conversion made it 14-0, but the rest of the half was frequently disrupted by injuries and, it seemed, persistent Glossop infringements.
Sleaford could not take full advantage of the referee’s decisions and their only period of pressure in the game saw them leave Glossop’s half with a missed penalty.
The somewhat stop-start nature of the game continued in the second half, but this time, Glossop’s pack were in no mood to mess around.
Having gained a scrum five metres out, the Glossop pack drove Sleaford backwards, allowing Clark to collect the ball and go over for a third try.
A strong scrum also brought about try number four as Clark fed Cassell who burst through two tackles for a brilliantly-worked score.
Once again, the game then lulled into a series of stoppages and scrappy play with both sides turning ball over.
The final act of note came from the man who had got Glossop off to the perfect start as Pickerell had the chance to work a play out wide.
With all of the Glossop players marked up, he slid a superb grubber through the Sleaford defence for Horbatchewskyj to scoop the ball up off the deck and stretch out for his second of the day.
He capped a man-of-the-match performance by making the difficult conversion attempt with ease.
