First for nine-holer

GREEN Haworth became the first nine hole club to win ELGA’s prestigious Scratch Shield competition since it started in 1907.
Andy Everett, Clive Robertson, Paul Swan and Martin Taylor were the Green Haworth heroes as they clinched the double - the presitgious Scratch prize as well as the Handicap Prize.
The East Lancashire Golf Association (ELGA) holds this competition every year at a different golf club - there are 25 clubs.
This year it was at Mytton Fold Golf Club where each club sent a team of four players and their combined scores determined the overall team winners.
There are two team prizes on the day, the elusive Scratch Prize (gross score) - with Green Haworth victorious with 299 winning it on a card play off from winners from the last two years Nelson. And they won the Handicap Prize which is the Presidents Trophy with their nett score of 286.
"It’s unusual for a team to win both prizes when playing away from home but Green Haworth achieved that and became the first nine hole club to win the Scratch prize since the competition started in 1907. It is a big achievement for the club," said Green Haworth’s Les Moss.
