Ending on high

16/ 4/2008

GLOSSOP North End boss Steve Young has challenged his players to end their home campaign on a high by taking three points off Nelson on Saturday.

The Hillmen entertained league leaders Trafford as the Advertiser went to press on Tuesday, leaving Saturday as their final league game of the season at Surrey Street.

With the chase for fourth place still very much alive, Young would like his squad to send the supporters away with a smile on their faces come 4.50pm on Saturday.

He said: "The fans have been excellent all season. One of my targets was to give them a team to come and support, a team who would excite them and make them want to come back again.

"This year’s been good for the team and the supporters. I think they’ve truly enjoyed it and three points from the final home game would send them into the summer with something to think about. I think we’re the fourth-best team in the league but I’ve always said the table doesn’t lie. If we aren’t there then we’ll be disappointed."

North End’s hopes of taking fourth spot in the table were boosted when they completed the league double over Congleton Town with a 3-2 away victory last Saturday. They were forced to do things the hard way though, twice leading by two goals before having Jason Gorton sent off for two yellow cards during the second half.

While the scoreline might depict a hard-fought battle, Young claimed he was always confident the three points would be making their way back to Surrey Street.

He said: "It was a good result, a good performance and I’m really pleased that we got back to winning ways but we outplayed them; 3-2 doesn’t reflect how comfortable it was. We defended really well for long periods; their game was based on the long ball into the box and what bits they could pick up."
