Pitch battle

2/ 4/2008

GAMESLEY were 2-0 winners at Curzon Ashton’s reserves on a day when both teams and officials were to be applauded for a game played in atrocious conditions.

Although tackles flew in throughout the 90 minutes, the fact that only one person was booked was a credit to everyone involved.

The game began evenly with both sides looking to create openings, Johnny Sarcevic going close for Curzon.

Gamesley duly opened the scoring on the half-hour as Pete Sidebottom found Liam Redmond whose cross was fumbled by the keeper, allowing Ashley Roberts to fire home.

With conditions having deteriorated and it becoming almost impossible to run with the ball, Mike Dewhurst still caused problems with his tricky runs.

Gamesley’s lead was doubled when Ben Blease was adjudged to have handled a shot from substitute Barry Longson, allowing Dewhurst to coolly convert from the spot.

Stalybridge Celtic’s reserves damaged Pilkington’s hopes of lifting the division one title thanks to a 3-2 win over the leaders.

Having beaten Gamesley 3-0 in midweek, Celtic fielded two 17-year-olds in the centre of defence and saw second-half goals from Danny Cocks (two) and Rick Whyatt give them three points.
