ALTHOUGH the Hillmen may have beaten St Helens 5-0 away from home just six weeks ago, the gale blowing on Saturday was expected to be a leveller.

Indeed, when Glossop came in at half time with only a 2-0 lead to show for their wind-assisted dominance, there were those who thought it might not be enough – a thought compounded by the concession of a sloppy goal right after the break.

However, with Jay Gorton and Rick Bailey bossing the centre of midfield, there was only going to be one winner.

Having taken 10 minutes to find their range, Glossop began to press as Hamilton’s effort was saved, Kay shot wide, while Morris and Hamilton also had goalbound shots blocked on the line, all before their 20th minute opener.

That came when St Helens cleared under pressure from Kieran Lugsden, only for the ball to eventually reach Bailey whose hard, low shot from a tight angle went under the keeper.

The lead was doubled two minutes later when Dave Young collected the ball 25 yards out before sidestepping a man and cutting inside onto his right foot before unleashing an unstoppable shot.

St Helens reduced the deficit on 48 minutes when Kelvin Lugsden unsuccessfully tried to dribble his way out of danger and was dispossessed by Dyson who finished cleverly.

Having seen Yates limp off, the Hillmen could have wobbled, but they were well protected by Bailey and Gorton and added to their tally in the 61st minute when Hamilton, Bailey and Morris all combined for Hamilton to sweep home from six yards.
