GLOSSOP surrendered their six-match winning streak in Northwich on Saturday with a performance full of effort, but without the quality that takes a side into the top five in their division.

Despite their hard work, they only forced a couple of saves from the Runcorn keeper while their hosts had a hatful of chances, many of which were gifted to them.

Runcorn had the best of the early possession with Fielding forced to push Young’s speculative effort wide, while the hosts’ determined rearguard meant North End were unable to get any shots away.

North End’s best chance came from a corner, and had Jay Gorton been able to turn his shin-height shot into the net rather than way over the bar, then the Hillmen may have settled.

As it was, they almost conceded when Yates’ shanked clearance was headed goalwards by Thompson, only for Fielding to paw the ball onto the post.

Braine should have opened the scoring when he shot wide for Runcorn, while Westmerland hit a shot against the keeper’s legs before half-time.

The second half saw Westmerland put a free kick wide before seeing his header well saved, but the game was a midfield battle until the 72nd minute.

A corner was taken from the left and Fielding was blocked in attempting to claim the ball which dropped six yards out for Thompson to poke it over the line.

It was 2-0 six minutes later when another mistake allowed Braine a run on goal, and although Fielding again saved, the ball went straight to Braine for a tap-in.
