Washed out

16/ 7/2008

GLOSSOP’S hopes of maintaining their challenge for this season’s JW Lees Lancashire County League title came to a soggy end at the weekend.

Rain meant that their game against Irlam at North Road was one of three division one matches to bite the dust.

They would have headed into the game in good heart after beating Cheetham Hill in their previous encounter.

Fielding first, Glossop saw their hosts reduced to 36-2 with Harwick and Rogers among the wickets.

However, that brought Hill professional Farhat to the crease and the former Pakistani international struck his first four deliveries for boundaries.

He was made to pay though when he tried to score a fifth, only to pick out Usher, and once Harwick accounted for Mirza, the hosts were reeling at 62-4.

Two more wickets left Hill on 82-6 before Anwar and Riaz took them to 153 with the home side eventually finishing on 186-8.

Rain meant that Glossop’s target was reduced to 175 from 45 overs, but moisture in the pitch meant Pennington was an early victim in reply.

Toft and Bates started chipping away at the target before the latter was joined by Perera in a stand of 86.

Perera (48) and man-of-the-match Bates (61) were both dismissed before Wilson (26) and Zaman (14) took them to victory on 175-4 in the 43rd over.
