Cheetham Hill 208-6 Denton West 161-8

WEST were only able to glean a solitary bonus point from their trip to face a Cheetham Hill side who have become somewhat of a bogey team for them in recent years.

Having won the toss and put the hosts into bat, West saw Scott Kirwin and Dave Letvenski produce some tight bowling as the home side could only reach 50-0 after 20 overs.

However, with wickets in hand, the run rate was sure to climb which proved the case as both Aaziz and Rodgers passed their half-centuries with the home side 140-0.

That quickly became 150-4 though as Stringer and Turner took two wickets apiece, and with the rest of the home batters unable to have much effect, West remained in the game at the conclusion of the hosts’ innings.

They were confident of securing victory provided they could bat out the 50 overs, only to be reduced to 45-5 when it was their turn to bat. Glenn Bullock and Andy O’Brien got West back in the game, the former making a half-century as West reached 140-6 with 10 overs remaining.

Once Bullock (51) and O’Brien (41) were dismissed, West dug in bravely for a valuable point to keep them within striking distance at the top of the table.

SUNDAY saw West progress into the last eight of the Lancashire Knockout competition with a six-wicket victory at Saddleworth League side Stayley.

A match reduced to 35 overs per side by the weather saw West put the hosts into bat and produce a dominant bowling display which left Stayley all out for 95.

With only a batting horror show likely to save Stayley, the West batsmen took their side to 96-4 and a quarter-final tie at Bolton League champions Walkden.
