Saints left hanging on

11/ 6/2008

Glossop 195-7, Denton St Lawrence 176-9 - GLOSSOP gained a winning draw from an important match between two sides who will be among the favourites for the JW Lees Lancashire County League title.

Home skipper Adam Wilson won the toss and chose to bat first on a wicket with clear evidence of moisture, suggesting good bowling would reap rewards.

Glossop lost the early wicket of Dale Pennington before Imran Zaman was dismissed in the 18th over, stumped by Matt Wake off Michael Batty for 15.

That saw Bathiya Perera join Dave Toft as Glossop’s most prolific pair of batters this term took their side past 100 and Toft to his fourth half-century in as many weekends.

However, he succumbed for 58 when he presented a chance to Walton off the bowling of Rashid Nadeem.

Moss and Bates quickly followed, leaving Glossop on 118-5 before Wilson and Perera added 72 in nine overs to take their side to 195-7, although it was unclear whether that would be a competitive score against Saints’ strong batting line-up.

As with the Glossop innings, there were early wickets for the bowlers as Barry Williams and Adam Hawley departed quickly with Saints 13-2.

With Paul Green at the crease, Saints remained in contention despite losing Scott Allen, LBW for 21.

Green and Matt Wake then put Saints in the driving seat with a combination of singles, selective hitting and fine strokeplay.

Once they were dismissed for 37 and 61 respectively, Saints looked like a team who would fall short, eventually hanging on for the final two overs with one wicket left.
