Glossop left to dodge the showers

14/ 5/2008

Glossop 212-5, Woodhouses 165ao - GLOSSOP took five points from a tough trip to a Woodhouses side keen to record their third victory from as many games at the start of the season.

Having won the toss, Glossop skipper Adam Wilson chose to bat first on a notoriously fast-scoring ground with an innocuous-looking surface.

Pennington and Toft got the innings off to an authoritative start, but just as Glossop’s young charges appeared to be steadying themselves for a repeat of their stand at Irlam on the opening day, Toft was trapped LBW with the score on 45.

Pennington and Zaman then added 43 for the second wicket, during which time the former brought up his half-century before he was also out LBW.

That was the fate that befell Zaman with the score on 123, followed by Moss as Glossop reached 140-4 when the rain began to fall with 12 overs remaining of their allotted 50.

An early tea followed after which Glossop found they only had seven overs left, during which time they plundered their way to 212 as man-of-the-match Bathiya Perera bludgeoned his way to a half-century to leave Glossop in a healthy position at the halfway mark.

They began the second half of the match with intent, Perera and Usher combining to dismiss Sutcliffe in the second over before Starmer followed for two.

McQueen and Cassidy took the hosts past 100, but as the game appeared to be slipping from Glossop’s grasp, the game turned when Perera bowled Cassidy.

That saw Glossop take control as Perera took a return catch to dismiss Atherton and eventually shared eight wickets with Hargreaves as the hosts were all out for 165.
