Charity hero on the line for his 30th jog

A FUND-RAISING hero will be donning his running shoes on Sunday to start the 30th annual Glossop Jog.

Peter Wood MBE, 78, was the brains behind the fun run which has so far raised more than £153,000 for various local and national charities.

He will be first off the blocks in this year's event which will be supporting CLIC Sargent - helping children with cancer - and Ashton's Willow Wood Hospice.

Organised by Glossop Rotary Club, the fundraiser sees people making their way around the Fauvel Road sports ground as many times as they can in one hour.

Peter, an active Rotary member who was awarded the MBE earlier this year for services to charity, said: "I've run every one of the Glossop Jogs apart from last year, so I am delighted to be asked to start it.

"It started purely and simply as a fun thing - I never thought it would really get off the ground but it has gone from strength to strength."

Peter, who is also financial director at Willow Wood, should have no problems on Sunday after running the BUPA 10k in May dressed as a tree.

Asked whether he'd be in fancy dress again, he said he'd think about it!

"The idea was and still is that everyone can take part, whether you're young or old, and we have gone from 100 to 400 people," he added.

"Last year we raised more than £9,000 and we hope to do the same again this year."

Anyone who would like to take part in Sunday's fun run should turn up at the sports ground for 11am.
