Uphill struggle? Not raising cash

IT'S an uphill struggle being a firefighter these days.

A fell race to raise money for the Fire Service's National Benevolent fund was held on Wednesday.

Starting at Glossop fire station and going around Wormstone, the five-mile race, which also involved climbing, was attended by runners from across the country.

Organiser, firefighter Des Gibbons said conditions were excellent and raised lots for the charity, which supports firefighters who are injured on the job.

"The winner was a local lad - Andi Jones - from Salford Harriers.

"He lives in Hollingworth and he came 10th in the London marathon. He's a great runner, he completed it in 31.30," said Des, who is also a member of Glossop Mountain Rescue team.

"We raised about £280 which I'm more than happy with. And for 87 people to take part, for the first time we've held the race here it's very good.

"Jackie Lee from Eryri Harriers had the best time out of the women with 39.49.

Des, 40, who has orgainsed many races including the inter counties in Crowden, is organising a race which will include orienteering on Sunday 30 December around Bleaklow.
