Last respects to a tireless champion

THE funeral of Gamesley community champion Walter Sutcliffe has taken place.

Mr Sutcliffe, 66, helped set up Gamesley Residents' Association and served for three years as the first chairman of High Peak Community Housing (HPCH) until he stepped down in December.

Mike Dewhurst succeeded him as chairman of the residents' association four years ago and attended the service in Dukinfield Crematorium.

He said: "It was a lovely service and was very well attended.

"Walter will be very sadly missed in the community. He did a lot for the community and was a nice bloke as well.

"He was instrumental in getting quite a lot of things going on Gamesley and was the first tenant to be chairman of the HPCH."

Glossop MP Tom Levitt also attended the service on Friday. He had sent a message of condolence to the family after Mr Sutcliffe died on 11 July.

He said that Walter was a tireless champion of ordinary people in Gamesley and beyond. He was totally committed to serving his community and was never afraid to speak up on behalf of the people he represented. "Everyone who knew him will remember him with great respect and affection," he said.

HPCH chief executive Sharon McCambridge said Mr Sutcliffe would be much missed and the differences he had made to Gamesley would live on forever.

Mr Sutcliffe leaves a widow Norah, three daughters, two sons, 17 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
