Crowds flocked to carnival capers

THERE were fears Charlesworth Carnival could fall victim to the rain but in the end the sun shone on revellers.

The village was out in force to enjoy circus skills, stalls and the famous fell race.

"It was really touch-and-go as to whether it went ahead or not at one stage," said committee member Chris Harbut.

"But the forecast was for brilliant sun and we made the decision to carry on and in the end it was very successful.

"There was probably a bigger and better parade than we've had for quite some years, and lots of people came, probably because they were glad to finally be able to get out of the house for a while!"

As well as the fell race, younger competitors could take part in the children's fell race, while less athletically inclined festival-goers could enjoy the beer and tea tents.

And a new event was the best-dressed scarecrow competition, which proved popular with more than 30 entrants.

Mr Harbut added: "We were just very grateful for everyone turning up and supporting it."
