Centre gets key of the door

CYNICS who said Glossop Heritage Centre wouldn't last six months will have to eat their words next month as the team finally gets the 'key of the door'.

The Henry Street establishment celebrates its 21st anniversary on 26 July and to mark the occasion volunteers have planned a month of free events.

Exhibitions of silverware and peg dolls, and a free draw where winners can take home paintings by local artists, are just an example of the proposed festivities.

Volunteer Ailsa Thompson, above, said everybody at the centre is very excited.

"It's a real achievement for everyone here. The centre was set up 21 years ago after an exhibition.

"The people who staged the exhibition said it was a shame it had to be taken down and thought they'd try and find a building where they could have it permanently on show.

"They set it up and there were opinions expressed that it wouldn't last longer than six months," she said.

The special silverware exhibition will begin on 2 July until 8 July, when trophies from the now defunct Glossop and District Cricket Club will be shown.

Canine trophies will be shown the next week and trophies for everything from dominos to dressmaking will be displayed from 16-22 July.

From 21 July tickets will be available for a free draw to win three paintings from the Heritage Gallery.

The draw will be made by Peggy Davies MBE, who has been involved with the centre from its birth, on the evening of the event on 26 July.

During that day the centre will be open from 10am to 8pm and volunteers will be wearing Victorian nightwear.

A high school art competition and a display of historic costume peg dolls will also be held during the celebration.

For more information contact the centre on 869176.
