Fair chiefs hoping for surprise ‘Hitman’ visit

THIS weekend's Glossop fair may not have a parade but the event could still pack a champion punch.

Before his latest triumph in Las Vegas, IBO light welterweight boxing champ Ricky Hatton indicated he would be appearing at some stage over the weekend.

Daphne Killick, a member of the committee of organiser Glossop Arts and Leisure Association, said: "A member of our committee knows him and said Ricky indicated he would be home in time, but it is up to his management. If he rings and says he can't make it, then we hope Ali Nuumbembee (Commonwealth boxing champ) might come instead."

Last year the fair included a parade from Glossop Brook Road along the High Street, but health and safety rules seem to have put a dampener on things.

Daphne said: "We contacted schools, clubs and other organisations and nobody wanted to put on a float or walk in the parade. There are so many rules and regulations."

The fun kicks off at noon on Saturday when High Peak Mayor and Dinting councillor Councillor Jean Wharmby and consort George perform the opening ceremony. On both Saturday and Sunday there will be a farmer's market, craft stalls and acoustic tent. Tameside Sea Cadets will be giving a display and there will be cheerleaders and acrobats, Grand Pretendos, plus fairground attractions and rides.

On Saturday only, Glossop firefighters will demonstrate how to extinguish a chip pan fire and there will be an RSPCA dog show and belly dancers. Glossop Old Band will perform from noon to 1pm and Glossopdale Jazz Band will be on from 1.30pm for a couple of hours.

On Sunday only, there will be a tug-o-war and vintage car show plus family entertainer Billy Diamond. Arnfield Brass will be playing 1-3.30pm.

Derbyshire County Council's waste exhibition truck will be there with recycling information.
