New councillor has conviction

20/ 6/2007

A NEWLY-elected Tory councillor has a past criminal conviction, the Advertiser can reveal.

Councillor Peter Kay, of Padfield Main Road, was found guilty of harassment in August 1998 at Glossop Magistrates' Court.

The offences took place between 7 June and 19 November 1997.

The court handed Councillor Kay a 12-month conditional discharge and he was ordered to pay £300 costs to the Crown Prosecution Service.

Councillor Kay, 65, who represents Padfield, pleaded not guilty to the offences. He told the Advertiser: "My conscience is clear."

In the May local elections Councillor Kay beat Liberal Democrat candidate Jonathan Smith by just one vote. Councillor Kay was voted in by 251 votes to Mr Smith's 250.

A High Peak Borough Council spokesman said anyone can be nominated as a councillor provided they have not had a criminal conviction in the last five years.
