LOOKING ahead: Coun John Faulkner.
Homes and jobs among Peak leader’s priorities
Penny Coles13/ 6/2007
HIGH Peak Council's new leader has outlined his vision for the borough - with affordable homes and jobs among his priorities
Councillor John Faulkner, who represents Burbage, was selected as leader of the council after the local elections in May.
He has lived in the High Peak for 20 years and was first elected to the ward in 2003. He subsequently served on the council's executive for four years, taking the lead on the council's budget.
Coun Faulkner said: "Although I live in Buxton, I am dedicated to working for the whole borough.
"My objective is to ensure the council improves the quality of life for all residents in the High Peak.
"I am keen to consult with all residents and I hope that the setting up of Area Boards later this year will make us even more accessible.
"I have a vision of how I would like to see the High Peak evolve over the next few years. I think there are areas we must work on.
"Our environment in the High Peak is beautiful and unique. I want to safeguard this by significantly improving our recycling and composting.
"Glossop residents have already seen the benefits of the Binnovation multi-material recycling and refuse collection service, which is going to be extended to the central area in July and Buxton in September.
"However, recycling is just one way of looking after our surroundings.
"I would also like to see higher paid jobs established within the borough, which will stop people having to commute.
"This will help the environment and boost the local economy.
"I want the High Peak to have an environment which people want to live in as well, and this means increasing the supply of affordable houses for the benefit of local people and providing opportunities for young people.
"I shall be carrying out a review of the Corporate Plan which details our priorities for action.
'I want to make sure that we enhance our reputation - deservedly.
"I shall be setting the council's budget and handling the financial strategy, with value for money and the drive for efficiency as key to our future success."
