‘Help us build a clinic in Kenya’

HADFIELD schoolchildren have been hearing about their poverty stricken counterparts on the other side of the world

Following a holiday in Kenya in 2001, Margaret and Geoffrey Trimby were so appalled by conditions in Mombasa they set up a charity to raise money to build a school and medical clinic in the city.

So far they have raised £6,680 towards their target of £15,000 and they called in at St Andrew's school to tell pupils about their work.

"They really enjoyed the talk," said Margaret. As part of their curriculum the pupils are learning about the Rift valley in Kenya so we showed them pictures.

"They asked us lots and lots of questions. They were very interested in the children and how they lived without amenities and toys that children in this country expect and are used to. Children in Kenya have nothing, not even a mattress to sleep on let alone chairs or desks at school.

"The pupils gave us some pens and books to send to the children."

Margaret has recently found out that she has been given 2.5 acres in Kikambala, Mombasa, on which to start building immediately.

They have already sent over countless boxes of clothes, school equipment and soap, among other things.

Margaret added: "Once we've built the school we'll have it properly sanitised and then actually teach the children to use the toilet because of course they've never had anything like that before."
