It's rough justice for Christmas strays

STRAY animals in Glossop could soon be finding there's no room at the inn.

The local RSPCA branch is hoping the angels and wise men will bring them a lifeline after they experienced their worst pre-Christmas period for years.

Although the branch has a policy of only taking animals for rehoming from their inspectors, they have received a record number of requests from people asking them to rehome their unwanted animals before Christmas.

Branch secretary Irene Platt said they have animals needing rehoming to suit everybody - from elderly, docile ones to young and energetic.

"Recently, the branch took in four Staffordshire Bull Terrier puppies which their breeder couldn't find homes for.

"So many Staffies are bred that they are the most common pedigree dogs to be found at shelters throughout the country," she said.

"All too often owners believe that they are doing their best for their dog by allowing her to have a first litter. This is not true.

"By having your dogs neutered at an early age you will be protecting them from developing health problems in the future, including womb infections and mammary cancers in bitches, testicular and prostate problems in males.

If you are on means tested benefits and need financial help with veterinary fees, low cost neutering is available.

Anyone interested in adopting or fostering an animal can phone and leave their details on 07050 264 531 (dogs) or 07977 757273 (cats).
