Walkers' trail partly closed

20/12/2006

FOLK who may be thinking of taking to the Longdendale Trail to walk off the effects of too much turkey over the festive season should be aware of a local diversion.

A water culvert which collapsed a few weeks ago has caused a section of the route from Hadfield to the Woodhead Tunnel to be closed for repair and the work is unlikely to be finished before the forthcoming Bank Holiday.

Allan Hartley, Trans Pennine Trail volunteer ranger, said: "The trail is very popular with local people, especially over the Christmas and New Year holidays. It provides parents and children with a chance to try out those new bikes, walk off festive excesses, etc.

"Those who wish to use the trail - weather permitting - should be aware that the section from Hadfield is open but only as far as the Torside crossing, where the repair works begin. A diversion is in place along the road to the Torside car park but this is not for the faint-hearted or young children.

"Beyond that, the section from Torside car park to Woodhead Tunnel is open as usual."
