College tree appeal

29/11/2006

FESTIVE cheer is coming to Glossopdale Community College over the next two weekends.

Christmas trees are to be sold at the college, with part of the proceeds going towards its £3.2m arts centre appeal.

Former student turned fruit and veg man Adam Corbally, who has his own stall on the outdoor market, suggested the gesture. He will donate five per cent of the proceeds towards the fundraising efforts.

Glossopdale Community College is planning to a new arts centre provisionally called the Glossopdale Community Arts Space (GPAS).

Adam, 26, said: "I am really pleased to do it as I always have fun selling the trees."

Chris O'Hara, Glossopdale College director of arts, said that although it would not be a great amount of money, every little helped and the college was very grateful.

He said: "It is a very exciting project and because of the sums involved it is not something that we could expect funding for from the Local Education Authority. £178,000 had already been raised from the sale of a Lowry painting earlier this year but the official fundraising will start next January and we hope to have the building up and running by April 2009."

The Christmas trees will be sold from the car park at the college's Talbot Road site on Saturday and Sunday this weekend and next weekend.
