Library marks its centenary

HADFIELD Library celebrates its centenary next month and well-known Glossop historian Peggy Davies will be giving a talk to mark the occasion.

A display of photographs of the village over the past 100 years will also be on show in the library, which is on the corner of Railway Street and Station Road.

The library opened in 1906 in the first floor of a building bequeathed to the town by Edward Platt, whose family owned a local mill.

Peggy, who managed Glossop Heritage Centre for 18 years as a volunteer, was awarded the MBE two years ago for services to the community. These included 21 years as secretary of Glossop Carnival, during which she helped raise over £50,000 for local charities.

Councillor Bob Janes, cabinet member for cultural and community services for Derbyshire County Council, said: "A library has existed in this building for 100 years and I am delighted that we have reached such an historic milestone.

"I would urge everyone to take part in the celebrations and take the time to visit the library, not only to look at the photographic exhibition, but also to see what is on offer at the library."

Peggy's talk, entitled Hadfield 1906, will begin at 7.30pm on Wednesday, 5 July. Entry costs £3 (£2 concessions), which includes refreshments. Call 01457 852589 to book.
