Road smash tragedy

TRIBUTE has been paid to a 23-year-old man killed in a car crash near Glossop Cemetery at the weekend.

Gavin Mooney, of Wharncliffe Close, Hadfield was pronounced dead at the scene after the car he was passenger in collided with a lamppost and telegraph pole and ended up on its roof.

Gavin worked at LHB Contracts in Park Bridge, Ashton until he left around 18 months ago. His friend, Chris Travers, also worked there and attended the same painting and decorating course at the town's college.

Chris, also 23, said: "I knew Gav since we were 14. He was a great lad, always fun to be around and very lively and entertaining. I was gutted to hear the news. Gav was a top lad."

Flowers and messages of condolences have been left at the scene. Tributes include a red LHB T-shirt tied around the telegraph pole with the words written on it: "From a time when we were closest. Thanks for the memories. Rob."

Another message reads: "So young. So sad. Always smiling. You will be greatly missed."

Gavin was travelling in a blue Fiat Punto from Hadfield to Glossop along Cemetery Road when the car lost control on a bend near the cemetery entrance.

It collided with a lamppost and a telegraph pole at around 11.25pm on Sunday. Glossop firefighters used air bags under the car to get it upright again and the road was closed for several hours.

Gavin's family in Hadfield were too upset to talk as the Advertiser went to press.

Police say the 20-year-old driver of the car, who is from Glossop, is helping them with their enquiries.

Witnesses or anyone with any information about the incident is asked to contact PC Pigott on 01773 572929.
