Factory fined over worker’s paralysis
19/ 4/2006
A GLOSSOP firm has been fined £40,000 after a worker was seriously injured in an industrial accident.
Stephen Monks was paralysed from the waist down after falling almost 12ft through an open trapdoor at Lancashire Chemical Works Ltd.
The accident, on 12 April last year, left him in hospital for seven months.
Now the High Street West company has been fined £40,000 and ordered to pay £15,000 costs.
The firm pleaded guilty to breaching the Health and Safety at Work Act and Work at Height Regulations in a hearing at Derby Crown Court.
Mike Nind, Health and Safety Executive inspector for Derbyshire, said: "This was an extremely nasty injury which could easily have been fatal. Every year people working at height lose their lives or suffer serious injury.
"No formal procedures were in place before the accident, with reliance being placed upon the experience of employees to undertake this work safely.
"Firms, contractors and their clients need to exercise sufficient control to prevent this sort of thing happening."
