Maternity unit is a leader in its field

22/ 2/2006

CLINICIANS met to say why Tameside's maternity unit was one of the best in the country.

They said that while they recognised the need for change in the north west, as one of the leaders in the field Tameside's paediatrics and maternity department should stay.

Lead paediatric consultant Dr Albert Massarano said: "Many of us attended numerous meetings that said we want units to adapt to current needs, like they're doing in Tameside. We're at the forefront of the changes that are needed."

Dr Andrew Watson, lead consultant, obstetrics and gynaecology, pointed to Tameside's excellent safety record. It is one of only two in the area that has a CNST (Clinical Negligence Scheme for Trusts) rating of two, which means that it is extremely low risk.

Death and illness rates overall are lower than the national average and death rates are also low for newborns.

And Dr Watson added: "Despite having a relatively needy population, we have excellent results."

Hyde GP Dr Raj Patel said the most important thing for the people he saw every day was that they wanted local services.

"My patients don't choose the shiny white towers of Manchester, they say they want to go to their local hospital. Pregnant mums want to have their babies at Tameside and they want to take their children to Tameside. What they want is a really safe service in the community, especially for those that can't get around easily," he said.

I urge Greater Manchester Strategic Health Authority to go with option A and keep maternity & paediatric services at Tameside Hospital, they have provided an excellent service to to community over the years.

Save our Maternity Unit. We have Tameside Hospital to thank for the safe arrival of both of our children and would like the tradition to carry on. They do a wonderful job! Just think of the excellent staff we would be losing and quality of service!
