Builders win their tall order for bigger homes

A MAJOR housebuilder has won the right to build bigger houses on its plush Glossop estate.

George Wimpey applied for permission to build houses up to two-and-a-half storeys high on its Annadale development on Mayflower Close, off Shirebrook Drive.

While there would be no increase in number of the 22 houses planned, High Peak Borough Council's acting head of planning, Adrian Fisher, told planning councillors on Monday there would be a net increase in the total square footage of homes on the estate.

Most of the existing detached houses also have four and five bedrooms, but are half a storey lower than the new homes.

Councillor Chris Webster said he receives more complaints about Wimpey on the Annadale estate than any other issue.

"Wimpey never come to this committee to build smaller houses - every time it's for houses with four or five bedrooms," he said.

"These will be massive compared to the existing houses on Shirebrook and will tower above residents on Appleton Drive."

He also criticised the access road to the estate, which he said still had no pavements or lighting despite Wimpey promising both.

Councillor Jane McGrother said the new houses will bring more money and spending power to the area.

A previous Wimpey bid to build seven more properties on the estate - refused in July - weren't included in this application.

Councillors approved the proposal by seven to one, with the condition that Wimpey improves the access road.

it is a disgrace that these big houses go ahead when many many many young peaple would love to get onto the housing market and are having to pay fees for property that is let when they could would and should be encouraged to buy there own home which glossop needs lower priced houses for first time buyers.and the monitorian should now start to allow this type of property to be built..for the local youngsters born in the erea..never mind the big posh property market start to think about the young ones
