Wristbands deter drink abuse

POLICE have launched a wristband campaign in a bid to stop alcohol abuse.

High Peak and Derbyshire Dales Community Safety Partnerships are introducing the wristbands in time for Christmas which are bright red and bear the slogan 'Put the Thinkin' into Drinkin.'

The initiative hopes to highlight the problems alcohol can cause after it was revealed that almost one third of violent crimes in the area is drink-related.

Sergeant Tracy Lewis, of Derbyshire Police, said: "Alcohol often causes people to act in ways they wouldn't if sober.

"Irresponsible drinking can lead to assaults and acts of vandalism and can make people more vulnerable to becoming victims of crime themselves.

"We hope the wristbands will cause people to think more carefully about the amounts of alcohol they are consuming."

The bands have received unanimous support from licensees and are available in most town centre pubs and clubs across the High Peak and Derbyshire Dales.

All money donated will go to the North Derbyshire Alcohol Advice Service (NDAAS).

The organisation provides confidential counselling to people with alcohol abuse problems and those who become violent after drinking.

The charity also helps relatives and friends affected by a loved one's drink problem through the Relatives and Friends Together service.

Anyone who would like to speak confidentially about alcohol abuse matters can contact NDAAS on 01246 206514.
