Developer loses appeal over plan for 37 houses

DEVELOPERS have lost their fight to build a housing estate in Gamesley.

High Peak Borough Council had already refused plans to build on the former Samas Roneo site on Glossop Road.

But although George Wimpey appealed against the decision, the development was turned down for a second time last week by the Secretary of State.

Wimpey planned to build 37 detached, semi-detached and mews properties at the site which has lain derelict since 2002.

Council officers said it should be kept for employment use.

A government inspector said: "The current over-supply in Glossop is not insignificant.

"In the absence of a proven local need for modest housing growth in Glossopdale, I find the development to be unnecessary.

"The policy also requires the developer to demonstrate there is no demand for the site for employment use."

A spokesperson for George Wimpey said: "We were keen to introduce a newbuild housing scheme as all the research we have done indicates a demand for new homes and we are therefore disappointed with the decision."
