Dealers given jail sentences

7/12/2005

EIGHT people have been jailed following a major drugs operation in Glossop.

Operation Slipknot was carried out in November last year to target illegal drug dealing.

Police carried out a series of dawn raids on addresses in Glossop and Hadfield and arrested 20 people, eight of whom were jailed at Derby Crown Court on Friday.

They all pleaded guilty to offences such as possessing and supplying Class A drugs. A £2,500 stash of cocaine and ecstasy was also seized.

Inspector Tony Dales, part of Derbyshire's Community Intelligence Unit, said: "This was a huge surveillance operation. Thanks to intelligence from members of the public, we were able to target 17 known drug dealers in the area.

"As a direct consequence of that these people were arrested.

"I think this sentencing sends out a clear message to those involved in drugs that we will, with the help of the public, track them down, arrest them and convict them."

Michael John Adams, 25, of Whitefield Avenue, was sentenced to two-and-a-half years for supplying and offering to supply cocaine.

Benjamin Adderly, 22, of Uplands Road, received four years for possession with intent to supply, offering to supply and being concerned in supplying cocaine.

Ailsa Jayne Craig, 20, of Redfern Close, Hadfield, was sentenced to 18 months for possessing cannabis, two counts of offering to supply ecstasy and two counts of supply.

Anthony Robert Davies, 22, of Market Street, Hollingworth, was jailed for two-and-a-half years for three counts of supplying and two counts of offering to supply ecstasy plus one count of offering to supply cocaine.

Melanie Holbrook, 33, of Lower Market Street, Broadbottom, sentenced to 18 months for supplying ecstasy and two charges of being concerned in supplying the drug.

Christopher Lee Lewis, 18, of Woodlands Close, Tintwistle, received 21 months for being concerned in supplying Class A drugs, two counts of supplying cocaine and three counts of offering to supply ecstacy and cocaine.

Michael Anthony Patterson, 24, of Highfield Road, Glossop, was given 18 months for possessing cannabis and supplying cocaine.

Daniel Philip Swallow, 22, of Victoria Street, was jailed for eight months for two counts of being concerned in supplying ecstasy, plus offering to supply and attempting to supply cocaine.

Two further defendants will be sentenced on 23 December.

With regards to the 'Big Time Drug Barons' of the area being sent to prison.... I would like to know why the Police dont stop wasting tax payers money and target the folk higher up the food chain in the drug industry? If they apprehended the people who supply these small time dealers (who will no doubt be replaced immediately) surley this would have a better effect on society in the long run. Also I am sick of 'undercover' police officers going out in packs on pub crawls around the area whilst sticking out like sore thumbs and getting a FREE night out. The sting raids on public houses that occured on Friday night are just to cause a stir and create a air of police affectivness, I would be interested to know what results if any these had and more so the cost and man power required for such an opporation? could this these resources not be put to better use in other areas of crime fighting?
