Painting to be unveiled after updated service

2/11/2005

ARTIST Vaughan Parker will be giving Glossop folk something to remember next Sunday when he unveils his long-awaited painting of the cenotaph.

Vaughan, 56, has spent the last two years working on the masterpiece - an 8ft by 12ft painting of a service on Remembrance Sunday.

Almost 200 familiar faces who attend each year have been captured on canvas including High Peak MP Tom Levitt, Neill Manchee - secretary of Glossop's Royal British Legion - and local war veteran Norman Brown who was killed in the town last year.

The painting - jointly sponsored by the British Legion and the Derbyshire Coalition for Inclusive Living - is based on a service Vaughan attended in Glossop as a child.

He said: "It was just something that stuck in my mind because of the whole atmosphere and it's something I've always wanted to do. I've worked on it morning until night for the past couple of years - but it is something unique and it's already become an attraction.

"Things like this always happen in places like Liverpool and Glasgow, so I'm hoping this will help to put Glossop on the map."

Before starting the painting, Vaughan collected photographs of representatives from every organisation to attend the memorial service. These will be displayed, along with a tape recording and a Braille book of Remembrance Day memories, when the painting is unveiled in the town hall following the service at the cenotaph next Sunday, 13 November.

The artist is also planning to produce prints and postcards of the painting to sell with all proceeds going to the Royal British Legion.

I am just writing to say how pleased i am for what Vaughan has done for glossop. Not only the painting of the rememberance day service in norfolk square but also the paintings he has done for partington players and glossop band. All three paintings are exceptional in their own right and are a credit to Vaughan and his self-taught talent.

Vaughan is a man with an exceptional talent. He also enjoys sharing his skills with people who may otherwise never have the opportuniity to paint a picture. Glossop is lucky to have an artist capable of pruducing a painting such as Remembrance Day
