Nurse’s phone pest torment

26/10/2005

A LOVELORN Iraqi refugee repeatedly texted a Glossop woman by mobile phone but the object of his affections was not interested.

Glossop Magistrates' Court heard that Bakhtyar Soran, 34, worked in A&E at Stockport's Stepping Hill Hospital from July to December last year.

His victim, Gloria Bevan, is a senior staff nurse at the hospital.

Prosecutor Mike Parker said: "Shortly after they met, the defendant asked her out.

"She was flattered, but saw themselves as no more than friends and wished to keep their relationship professional.

"He asked for her mobile phone number. She felt sorry for him and thought he would call a few times and then get the message, but he called all the time and at all hours.

"She even got the head of security at the hospital to ward him off and the calls stopped, but soon afterwards they started again."

He said that Bakhtyar had served a prison sentence for a similar offence.

Defending, Saul Comish said the text messages were not mysterious or sinister, but his client had not got the message from the complainant and had lost his job as a result.

Mr Comish said: "He came from Iraq five years ago as a refugee and has few friends.

"He is in a strange country a long way from home. He still has a problem and needs help."

Bakhytar, of Egerton Road North, Whalley Range, Manchester admitted harassment without violence between 1 July 2004 and 1 August 2005 and the case was adjourned until 15 November for pre-sentence reports.

All a bit strange...why didn't she change her phone number? Infact why give it to him in the first place?
