A bright idea to help cut crime
David Himelfield26/10/2005
DERBYSHIRE Police, Powergen and Neighbourhood Watch have joined forces in an initiative aimed at reducing domestic burglaries.
The project involves supplying 10,000 low-energy light bulbs to homes across Derbyshire.
It is particularly aimed at those belonging to repeat victims of burglary and vulnerable members of the community.
The scheme was the idea of Sandra Haycock, the force's Community Involvement Officer, and David Hull, Powergen's community energy adviser.
It aims to provide a cost-effective and energy-efficient method of illuminating homes as well as detering potential thieves.
Sandra said: "We want people to leave lights on in their homes without worrying about the cost.
"We are constantly advising people to leave lights on in their homes and this scheme allows them to do just that."
Mr Hull added: "At Powergen, we're committed to encouraging people to be more energy efficient. One way we achieve this is through initiatives like this."
Anyone interested in the scheme should contact Derbyshire police on 01773 572806.
