Vicar in court on fraud rap

7/ 9/2005

A CHARLESWORTH vicar appeared in court this week on serious fraud allegations.

Tony Craggs, 42, of Charlesworth Congregational Church, appeared before Glossop magistrates accused of preparing power of attorney in respect of the property of two women, Margaret Shaw, 82, and Lillian Radcliffe.

He is alleged to have done so posing as a solicitor.

It is claimed Mr Craggs befriended Miss Shaw while she was in hospital after suffering from a stroke. He is also alleged to have prepared a will for Miss Shaw without her consent, that would leave substantial parts of her estate, including her house, to him.

Mr Craggs is also facing nine counts of theft from a bank account - including sums of £3,750, £1,500 and £1,000 - totalling more than £6,500 between 6 March and 22 May 2003.

It is also alleged he stole jewellery between 1 February, 2003 and 9 December, 2004.

Mr Craggs, of The Manse, Back Lane, Charlesworth, Glossop did not speak in court. Defending solicitor Stephen Kerrigan said Mr Craggs denies all charges and requested a six-week adjournment.

Magistrates granted Mr Craggs conditional bail until his next appearance at the court for crown court committal on 18 October.

Mr Craggs declined to comment as he left court.

Can we get this into persective here a man is innocent until proven guilty at least that was the law last i heard. We're not living in the dark ages here. Secondly i dont see why his personnel life should be dragged through the mill, which bears no significance to the alleged charges. Do you people know him personaly? i dont think so!!. What about his ex taking up with some one who also abandoned his wife and family nothing is said about that. So really there is two sides to the story. Get your facts right prior to opening your mouth..
