HAVING fun: Last year’s Victorian weekend in Glossop
Stepping back to the good old days

SHOPKEEPERS in fancy dress, steam engines, shire horses and a Victorian funeral procession through Glossop Town Centre - it can only mean one thing!
Thousands are expected in Glossop this weekend when the town takes a step back in time for the 26th annual Victorian Weekend.
The popular event brings the streets to life from Friday to Sunday with a variety of old-fashioned family entertainment from clog dancers and illusionists to a Punch and Judy show.
Music will be provided by Arnfield Brass Band plus Glossop Old Band and Glossop Jazz Band who will take it in turns to lead the grand parade on Saturday and Sunday.
And, as usual, visitors are being encouraged to join in the fun by dressing up - and be in with a chance of winning a cash prize.
Judges will be casting a critical eye to find the best-dressed shop window, shop assistant, man, woman, child and family.
Hannah Watson, who helped organise the event, said: "We're having a Victorian funeral procession in the parade this year which we haven't had before and we also have a number of steam engines including the Tiger Tractor.
"People come to the Victorian weekend from all over. We've had visitors from Japan and 'Songs of Praise' was filmed here a few years ago too.
"It generates a lot of interest and it's all thanks to the committee members.
"They haven't got much money and they need a lot of help from local businesses but it's something they are really passionate about."

Got an opinion you want to share?
What did we find? - All the streets open to traffic again. Kids on the station taking the train to Manchester for a night out. The fairground stalls and trailers sheeted and dark.
Is this the Glossop Victorian shopping hours weekend? It certainly isn't a continuous weekend in anything like the vein that I have enjoyed functions over my five plus decades!
I certainly won't be coming again if this is all that is on offer after normal working hours.
Perhaps someone could comment on the reasons for this curfew type of situation. Public order fears, Nimbyism?
Tourism and entertainment this isn't!
