Cheers to new town brewery!

7/ 7/2005

TWO drinking partners are saying cheers to their new careers after opening a brewery in Glossop.

Beer making has dried up in the town since Glossop Brewery closed its doors last year.

But friends Tony Hulme and Les Dove are now hoping to pump new life back into the bitter business with Howard Town Brewery Ltd.

The pair have spent three months converting what was the Bridge End Fulling Mill in the Howard Town Mill complex.

The joint venture is set to take off this week when the first batch is brewed and should be available in local pubs within a fortnight.

Tony, 55, who also runs his own computer software company, said: "Neither of us really has a background in it apart from the fact that we both like beer but after 20 years in computers I fancied a change.

"We spent some time at Millstone Breweries in Mossley plus Les is an engineering consultant so that came in handy on the technical side.

"Choosing it was the easy part. There's a lot of information available about it and it's like making a curry - you decide what sort of taste, colour and bitterness you want and pick the ingredients to suit."

The pair will start with session beer 'Bleaklow' and a light, hoppy bitter called 'Wren's Nest' and plan to expand to four regular beers plus seasonal brews.

Ales should be available in the Globe, the Star, the Old Gloveworks and at Glossop Beer Festival in September.

Tony added: "We have had a practice so hopefully the first lot should be ok and we think it will go down well. We've already had lots of people offering to be tasters!"

Website www.howardtownbrewery.co.uk will soon be up and running with more details.
