GLOSSOP is top of the 'special' cops, according to Derbyshire Police.

Officers say the town has the best team of special constables in the county - 13 regularly out on the beat. And although the volunteer bobbies only need to give a minimum of four hours a week, Glossop specials have been going above and beyond the call of duty to clamp down on crime in the area.

Inspector Tony Dales, of Derbyshire's Community Intelligence Unit, said: "We have the best team in the county with 13 who are active in working in the community and providing support for our police officers.

"We even have specials who turn out on a Friday and Saturday night for up to eight hours at a time and stay at the sides of officers dealing with disturbances in the town centre.

"This is fantastic for us. Having more uniformed people there gives extra support and confidence to the officers and it also acts as a stronger deterrent."

He added: "Specials are vital in helping us and also free us up to focus on the high visibility patrols and responding to calls which provides a better service for the people of Glossop."

Police manned an information stand at Tesco on Saturday as part of a county-wide recruitment drive for specials. Although officers say the response was good, anyone interested can still get in touch as the door is always open.

Applicants need to be 18-50, physically fit and able to spare at least four hours each week. Successful candidates will be asked to take an aptitude test, complete a medical questionnaire and must be of good character.
