MEET the Gamesley dream team!

Police have put together a new team of officers dedicated to tackling crime on the estate.

And as the neighbourhood policing team set to work on Friday, they had high hopes of success.

The group will be led by Sergeant Michaelson-Yates with PCs Paula Doyle and Dan Houareau, who already cover the Gamesley beat.

Special constables Mike Dixon, Alec Maryan, Yvonne Carter and Suzanne Meadowcroft will work with the officers as well as the newly-appointed police community support officer Ann Morris.

Local councils, schools, and residents' groups have also pledged their support as well as neighbourhood watch. Since an appeal in the Advertiser two weeks ago, four residents have volunteered to be neighbourhood watch co-ordinators.

Chief Inspector Stuart Thompson, who launched the team, said: "Gamesley has a history of youth nuisance and anti-social behaviour and these officers will be working with other agencies and the community to tackle problems and find lasting solutions such as looking at things for kids to do.

"As the existing beat officers Paula and Dan have already done a lot of the groundwork and our aim now is to build on that and take it a stage further."

The initiative is part of a government plan to have a neighbourhood policing team for every community in the country by 2008.

Insp Thompson added: "The team will provide high visibility reassurance so the public feel safer in their own homes. At the moment they are based at Glossop Police Station but we are looking in the long term to have a base on the estate."
