Step back along memory lane

GLOSSOP will celebrate 101 years of history next month as part of Derbyshire's Market Towns Week.

County councillors scooped a £2,500 grant from the East Midlands Museums, Libraries and Archives Council to join in the event which aims to highlight the importance of market town communities.

To mark the occasion in Glossop, volunteers will be visiting shops featured in a 1904 leaflet about the town.

New pictures will be taken to build up a modern-day photographic archive of the area and these will then go on show at the library and Glossop Heritage Centre.

Market Towns Week takes place from 30 April to 8 May and photos will also be shown to the town's older residents to gather memories about shopping in the town.

Jaci Brumwell, of the council's cultural and community services, added: "This gives us an opportunity to promote the vital role of our libraries as well as the services they offer including access to thousands of books, videos, DVDs, CDs and free use of the internet."
