New-look shop is now streets ahead

CORRIE'S Julie Hesmondhalgh showed her star quality this weekend when she opened the new-look Oxfam shop in Glossop.

Julie, who lives in Broadbottom, is best known as Hayley Cropper - currently in trouble for aiding and abetting murder suspect Angela Harris in the hit soap.

But the charity champion managed to escape Weatherfield for the day on Saturday to admire the bigger and better store.

Oxfam, which first opened in the town 32 years ago, has now expanded into the next-door premises on Henry Street.

Formerly a chocolate and coffee shop which has moved down the road, the unit now houses Oxfam's impressive collection of books and music.

Manager Anne Musson said: "We've always been a very successful shop and when next door became free it seemed an ideal time to expand.

"People can walk through between the two and we now have a separate section for books and music. The market for them is very big now and we have so much on vinyl there must be a few collectibles!"

The original unit has also been refurbished and sells a range of clothes and bric-a-brac plus Fairtrade produce such as tea, coffee and chocolate.

Anne added: "As Julie lives locally and is a visitor and supporter of Oxfam, we thought she was perfect to open it."

The shop is also on the look-out for volunteers to give as little as four hours a week. Call in from 9am-4.30pm Monday to Saturday.
