Action day in aid of poor countries

14/ 4/2005

GLOSSOP Justice and Peace Group is holding an open air event to help make things fairer for developing countries.

A 'Week of Action' has been organised by the Trade Justice Movement which will see events taking place nationally to highlight the plight of farmers and vulnerable industries in poorer countries. It culminates in a protest in London where thousands will gather to demonstrate.

Doing their bit locally, Glossop's Justice and Peace Group is staging an event in Norfolk Square on Saturday, where there will be an opportunity to cast votes for trade justice and to pick up information about the campaign.

Secretary Chris Nudds said: "Our action is an act of solidarity. The reality for millions of people in poor countries is that they can't afford to feed their families or send their children to school because of the free trade policies their governments are being forced to accept. World leaders must change this and make it possible for poor countries to use trade as a way out."

At Saturday's event, which runs from 10am until 4pm, Fairtrade food will be on sale. There are also activities for children and a chance for some children to win a free Fairtrade chocolate bar.
