Bypass bike demo support is critical

CYCLISTS are being urged to put themselves in the frame to campaign against the proposed bypass
The Road Alert Glossop campaign group says the building of the Mottram-Tinwistle bypass will destroy wildlife, increase traffic and lead to more congestion.
They are staging a four-mile bike ride across Glossop on Friday, 14 September to make their feelings known.
"It was a few of us in Glossop who all cycle who thought of the idea," said Jonathan Atkinson.
"The idea was to say 'we cycle - we don't want a bypass'. We want more cycle lanes and investment in safer roads, not a bypass.
"Something like £200M will be spent on the bypass. Everyone agrees we need something to be done, but why don't they spend that on things like cycling which is not only good for your health but good for the environment?
"So many people cycle in the area and it's quite a dangerous area to ride yet a little bit of investment could really turn things around.
"The Highways Agency say there'll be more traffic in the area if the bypass is built so the roads will be more dangerous."
The Critical Mass ride begins at Glossop railway station at 5.30pm and passes Swallow's Wood near Tintwistle before finishing at the Bulls Head pub.
Jonathan, a researcher from Whitfield, cycles to the railway station every day to get the train to work in Manchester.
He added: "The ride coincides with national car free day. It's for all ages and abilities. It's not a speed cycle.
"We've chosen the route specially so it's not too hilly, so anybody interested in joining us should just turn up at the station."
Around 40 people have already said they are attending and Jonathan is urging cyclists to be safe by wearing reflectors and come along with their bells and whistles.
