Jobs in store

A NEW Lidl supermarket being planned for Glossop will create new jobs, say bosses.

The company is applying for permission to build a store on the site of the former Wild and Hallam car showroom on Brookfield, which has lain vacant for several years.

Lidl says 25 full and part-time jobs will be created if councillors give the green light.

And they also claim they won’t be a threat to the town's existing traders.

"Lidl UK complements existing small retailers as we do not have in-store bakers, butchers, florists, dry cleaners or other concessionary outlets," a spokeswoman said. This means that customers shop at Lidl for basic goods and still use the small retailers for more specific items."

She added: "We believe a Lidl store would represent a clean and attractive development of this important gateway site into Glossop and contribute to the regeneration of the local area."

A tidy site — the store will have a sales area covering just under 11,000 sq ft as well as parking for 73 cars — is also being promised by the German-owned chain.

"There will only be one delivery per day and there will be no bins on site, as the waste from the store will be taken away to be recycled by the same delivery lorry, contributing to Lidl’s environmentally friendly policies," the spokeswoman added.

Before submitting its planning application, Lidl held an open day as part of a public consultation, where it says the views of those attending were taken into consideration regarding the store‘s design. Meetings were also held with High Peak planners to progress the scheme.

If members of High Peak Council’s development control committee give the go-ahead at the end of January, the new store should open next autumn.
