SAVE it: Emma Lawrence and Bohdan Paris in the wood
Don’t Swallow up our wood
5/11/2008
A CAMPAIGN group set up to stop the Mottram Tintwistle bypass led a nature walk around the woodland they are fighting to save.
Supporters of Save Swallows Wood turned out on Sunday despite the wintry weather.
Organiser Emma Lawrence says they want to keep up the momentum after the bypass inquiry was halted.
"It’s all been very serious with the inquiry so we wanted to get everyone together and have a bit of fun" she said. "We have got a good level of support but we wanted to keep the momentum and remind people what we’re fighting for."
The public inquiry into the bypass started in June last year but was adjourned in December because of mistakes by the Highways Agency.
After the announcement earlier this month that it will not resume until May, it is now on course to set the record for the longest hearing into a road in Britain.
"For us, the news is double-sided," Emma added. "On the one hand we want to have the correct information so we are happy to wait, but on the other we are all volunteers and have spent a lot of time putting our evidence together. Now we have to do it all again."
