Police clampdown on pavement parking

8/10/2008

POLICE are to step up patrols in a bid to curb drivers parking on kerbs.

It follows complaints from people about vehicles parking on the pavements on High Street West, Primrose Lane and Charlestown Road in Glossop, especially at evenings and weekends.

Constables and police community support officers will be patrolling these areas to spot drivers parking their vehicles on kerbs, and speaking to residents about the dangers it can cause other road users.

Sergeant Jon Bowman, of the Glossop safer neighbourhood team, said: "I can appreciate that parking is very limited and that there are issues with lorries using Primrose Lane overnight. But when vehicles are parked either fully or even partially on the pavements, it causes an obstruction for pedestrians, wheelchair users and parents with pushchairs. We really just want to remind people to park sensibly and with consideration for other road users to ensure the area is safe for all of us to use."

He added: "At this moment we are keen to be advising drivers and looking at potential solutions with our partners. If the situation doesn’t improve, We may have to issue tickets, but we hope residents will take on board the concerns brought to us before that stage."
