Tributes are paid to tragic crash couple

1/10/2008

FAMILY tributes have been paid to the couple killed when their car crashed in Glossop town centre.

David and Mary Muir lost their lives when the Suzuki Jimny Mr Muir was driving hit a railway-bridge wall at the corner of Arundel Street and Fauvel Road.

Both were tireless fund-raisers for several charities such as Diabetes UK and RSPB — David had been out fund-raising for the RNLI on the morning of the tragedy last Saturday — and were active members of Glossop’s University of the Third Age.

Both were in their 60s and lived on Sumners Place in the town.

Mary’s son Simon Renwick said: "I’d like to thank everyone in the Glossop for their help and support, kindness and sympathy and all the flowers and donations."

Simon, 39, who lives in Dukinfield, grew up in Glossop, and also has a sister, Catherine, 42, who lives in Hadfield. He believes he received his love of reading from his 67-year-old mother.

"My mum had been a librarian with Tameside Council for many years.  I spent a lot of time in rooms with books and that’s why I got started reading."

David’s brother, Keith, thanked the emergency services for their efforts, and also friends of the well-known couple for their condolences.

Keith lives in Audenshaw and is nine years younger than his 60-year-old brother. David worked 33 years as a bus driver and has two daughters and two grandchildren.

He was born in Oakhampton, Devon, and the family later moved to Higher Openshaw.

"I always remember Christmas mornings when I was nine or ten," said Keith. "I’d get up at 4am when he was coming in from a night out and telling me to get back to bed," said Keith. "It’s a sad loss."

The funeral service took place at Dukinfield Crematorium on Wednesday.
