Would-be thieves are shopped by radio link
by Tom Rowley1/10/2008
MEMBERS of a scheme which links shopkeepers with police by radio have been praised for their help in tracking down suspected shoplifters in Glossop town centre.
PCSOs Lee Baker and Jordan Kelly were on patrol when they were alerted via the Shopwatch radio to a theft from the Co-op store on Norfolk Street.
Using their local knowledge and the help of Shopwatch retailers, they were able to match descriptions of the suspects with two people seen boarding a Manchester-bound train at Glossop station. They alerted police officers to the station and a bag containing nearly £200 of goods was recovered, according to police.
Sergeant Barry Doyle said: "This is a prime example of the benefits of the Shopwatch scheme and our PCSOs using their local knowledge to help officers make a quick arrest. Everyone involved should feel pleased with the result and I would urge other retailers interested in joining the scheme to get in touch."
A 40-year-old man and a woman aged 46 were arrested and later bailed pending further enquiries.
Anyone with information on the incident — which occurred around 6pm on Saturday — is asked to contact police on 0845 1233333 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
