C-Charge: no vote for Glossop commuters

25/ 9/2008

GLOSSOP commuters won’t have a vote when the referendum on the congestion charge takes place later in the year.

But residents who work in Manchester could face daily charges of up to £10 when the charge becomes operational — possibly in 2013 — should the Greater Manchester-wide ballot approve the scheme on 11 December.

A meeting to discuss the implications of the charge for Glossop commuters will be held next week.

It will discuss planned public transport improvements linking High Peak with Greater Manchester and how they might affect residents and businesses in the borough.

High Peak Council leader Tony Ashton said: "The proposed congestion charge has the potential to affect residents who commute or who visit Manchester regularly.

"Businesses could also be affected because of the financial and practical implications of the proposals.

"Please come along to the meeting to ask questions. I would also encourage residents and business representatives to take part in the public consultation."

Officers from Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Authority as well as officers and councillors from High Peak will be at the meeting, which begins at 7pm on 2 October in Bradbury House on Market Street.

Residents who cannot attend can submit questions beforehand to Mark James, Planning Policy and Design, Municipal Buildings, Glossop, SK13 8AF or email: markj@highpeak.gov.uk or call 0845 1297777, extension 3643.

More details can be found at www.gmfuturetransport.co.uk and folk can also contribute to the public consultation — which ends on 10 October — by emailing gmfuturetransport@Ipsos-Mori.com or writing to GM Future Transport Consultation, Ipsos MORI, Admail Freepost 4115, Manchester M4 5ZZ.
